Flat Ironing Hair

by Serena

I have naturally wavy hair and I flat iron it daily and now it's getting some frizz but not much. What should I do?

Response to Flat Ironing Hair

Hi Serena,

I know you enjoy how the flat iron makes your hair look, however, whenever you apply heat to your hair repeatedly, this can ultimately result in hair damage.

You see, compared to chemical straightening techniques, which permanently restructure the hair, flat irons help you achieve pin-straight hair by pressing it through heated tongs, which temporarily reshape the hydrogen bonds in the hair's inner core. However, this heat eventually results in damage to the outer cuticle--dry ends, fly-aways, dulling and breaking that gives your hair a thin, shaggy appearance.
.
If you use a wet-dry iron, that sizzling sound is not good--this is the sound of the water in your hair turning to steam, not being "sealed" into the hair's cuticle as some flat iron marketers claim. Similarly, ceramic tourmaline flat irons that purport to exert "negative ions" into the hair to make it less frizzy are no better than standard metallic irons.

Here is what I recommend Serena:

1) Use your flat iron at the right heat settings--and use it as infrequently as possible--this can help you avoid dull, broken, heat-damaged hair.

2) Wash your hair with an all natural shampoo that will add large amounts of moisture to your hair shafts as well as restore the PH balance of your hair. Our HERBAL SHAMPOO TREATMENT is loaded with health building ingredients that will help repair the dry, damaged state your hair has fallen into.

3) You might also want to try using a leave-in conditioner in your hair, or alternately, using a spray, cream or gel. The goal is to keep your hair lubricated during the course of heat styling.

Please keep me posted on your progress Serena.

Warm Regards,
Nanette
