Hydrocortisone - Sunburn

by Danielle

Hi!

My name is Danielle and I recently went to a dermatologist to look at red bumps I get after I shave or my skin rubs together. She told me it was just irritated, and since I have to shave every day being a red head and white and having very sensitive skin that is hard to keep up on. The doctor recommended hydrocortisone. My mom and I went right away to get the creams cortizone 10 with aloe and cortizone 10 cooling relief. I used the one with aloe right away. Today my boyfriend and I went swimming and I put sun tan lotion everywhere but my stomach legs and back. When we got home my stomach was burnt and my legs had this weird red blotch and burn which looked like the outline of my bottoms, but my mom said I may have gotten a reaction to the cortizone from being in the sun. I was like, "No there was no side effects listed", so I took her thought and went searching and came across your website. My question is do you think or know of sun burn reactions from cortizone?

Thanks,Danielle

Hi Danielle,

You should know that it is possible to experience hydrocortisone side effects that are anywhere from mild to severe while in the sun. The skin may become excessively sensitive to natural sunlight, increasing the chances of sustaining a sunburn. I am not surprised you were not warned of these risks as, sadly, this neglect is quite prevalent. You should have been informed to avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths or use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.

To address the red bumps you get after shaving, this is really quite common among many women as well as men. These bumps are a result of shaving over closed pores, so be sure to shave only after soaking in very warm water, which opens pores. This will also prevent you from having goose bumps, which can produce a red rash if you shave over them.

Other bumps are caused by bits of skin that get run over by the razor. Be sure to exfoliate your skin before shaving by rubbing with a loofah or washcloth. This will help produce a smoothness that will allow the razor to glide right over your skin avoiding the possibility of bumps.

Sometimes, ingrown hairs which are caused by shaving, cause an inflammation that results in red bumps. This occurs most likely in areas where your hair is coarser or curly such as the bikini line and upper thighs.

To prevent these red bumps, consider switching to a single blade razor on areas where these bumps crop up, and shave with the direction of hair growth in these areas. Exfoliate your skin before shaving and in between shavings.

I highly recommend using our FACE & BODY MOISTURIZING WASH to keep your skin healthy, moist and ready for shaving. This all over body wash moisturizes 7 layers deep and lifts up dead cells to keep skin smooth. In fact, lather a little up and use it as your base for when you need to shave...it works great! Follow your shaving session with a thin coat of our HAND & BODY THERACREAM which will deeply moisturize and add a coat of protection, keeping your skin smooth and red bump free!

Please keep me posted on your results Danielle and all my best to you.

Warm Regards,
Nanette
