Impetigo - How Long Does It Last?

I have impetigo. I've been on oral antibiotics for 3 days and the area is still weeping with fluid. I keep it covered with gauze and tape, but it doesn't seem to want to quit weeping? I apply anti-itch cream to it as well and a little Aquaphor to the bandage so that it won't stick to the skin when I clean the wound. Now I have tiny (pore size) white bumps all around my nose area? Will this ever quit? How can I get rid of this? My friend is telling me that I should let the wound breathe a little, but when I do, I get the large crusted stuff around it and it is bothersome. Do I keep it covered or do I let it breathe?

Hi Nick,

You are correct in that impetigo can have very bothersome symptoms. For our website views, I will say that impetigo is generally caused by one of two bacteria: staphylococcus aureus or group A streptococcus. There are two types of this condition: bullous (large blisters) and non-bullous (crusted). The non-bullous or crusted form is most common. This is usually caused by staphylococcus aureus but can also be caused by infection with group A streptococcus.

Non-bullous begins as tiny blisters. These blisters eventually burst and leave small wet patches of red skin that may weep fluid. Gradually, a tan or yellowish-brown crust covers the affected area, making it look like it has been coated with honey or brown sugar.

Bullous symptoms are nearly always caused by staphylococcus aureus, which triggers larger fluid-containing blisters that appear clear, then cloudy. These blisters are more likely to stay intact longer on the skin without bursting. Sometimes antibiotics are necessary for some individuals.

Although impetigo usually clears up on its own in two to three weeks, it is best to do the following to facilitate the healing process. My strong recommendation in caring for this condition includes gently washing the areas of infected skin every day with our FACE & BODY WASH which is hypo-allergenic and will provide anti-bacterial protection. Be sure to use a clean gauze and soak any areas of crusted skin in the warm soapy water to help remove the layers of crust (it is not necessary to completely remove all of it).

Hi,

My General Practionor diagnosed me with impetigo about 10 weeks ago and I think it has left a scar. It is on my face on my right cheek, and is very noticeable. My doctor prescribed Fucidin and said that it wouldn't leave a scar, but I think it has. I'm still using the cream, as he told me to continue with, and that eventually the mark will fade.

Please can you help??

Hello,

First, from what you are telling me, you are still using the Fucidin cream. For our website viewers, let me say that the drug, Fusidic acid, is a bacterial protein synthesis inhibitor that prevents the turnover of elongation factor G (EF-G) from the ribosome. Fusidic acid is only effective on gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus species and Corynebacterium species and acts to inhibit bacterial replication but does not kill the bacteria, and is therefore termed "bacteriostatic".

Unfortunately, without the proper health building ingredients to assist the healing of the skin, the blisters or pustules associated with this condition called impetigo, can very well leave a scar or mark. At the end of May last year I had a little crusty spot in between my eyebrows. I picked at it, not knowing what it was. By mid-June it had spread to all up and down my cheeks and above my lip. I went to the derm and he said it was just dry skin. I went back towards the end of July at the height of its severity and the new Derm said it was impetigo. He gave me some (I know this isnt spelled right) muproxin, and after about 5 days it pretty much went away.

I started Accutane Aug 11th, and it almost immediately came back. After dealing with a mounting break out, the breakout, and then coming off the breakout in the exact same fashion every month, I asked for a new ointment in November. Now I have been using (once again spelling) gentamicin sulfate. But with the same effect, theres never really a time there is not some impetigo-caused noticeable marking on my cheeks or above my lips.

The Derm said it was coincidence that I was exposed to impetigo and then went on Accutane, and because Accutane dries out your skin he kind of eluded that I would have to deal with it the whole time. I have not taken Accutane since Dec 20th, and am getting a impetigo breakout right now.

Is the Accutane still in my system drying out my skin? Am I going to have to deal with constant breakouts my whole life? How can I get them to stop, as they are so noticeable...

Note, with the docs approval, I have almost been constantly using one of the two ointments, at least twice a day and 3 times during the breakout, and up my nose as he said thats where the drainage is. The breakouts seem to be concentrated above my lip though.

I think its the crust kind, as it starts getting rid, then crusts over yellow, then back to red. Itchy the whole time.

You mentioned 3 prescriptions you have used. Mupirocin is used as a topical treatment for bacterial skin infections, for example, furuncle, impetigo, open wounds, etc. Gentamicin sulfate is a broad-spectrum antibiotic derived from an actinomycete used in the treatment of various infections. Accutane is used to treat severe nodular acne. You should know that Accutane causes serious permanent side effects!! These include: causes growth plates to fuse (it stops bone growth in prepubescent and adolescents!), causes permanent vision problems, causes hair to fall out causing baldness long after you've stopped taking it, can cause serious cases of arthritis long after you stop using Accutane, causes permanent liver damage and Accutane can cause serious birth defects long after you've stopped taking it. All of these side effects are admitted by the manufacture. They know Accutane is dangerous!!

Here is what I highly recommend:

Hello.

I've recently had a break out of red spot-like things around my mouth and under my nose.
Before that I had a cold-sore looking thing in the corner of my mouth. However, as I, in my 22 years had never had a cold sore, presumed it was merely dry skin so applied Vaseline ALL around my mouth and the skin surrounding it.

I have been to my local general practitioner, who suggested it may in fact be impetigo. He's prescribed me Fluoxicillian (forgive spelling of that antibiotic if slightly off)
I have been taking these tablets for 5 days. It doesn't seem to be removing these under-skin looking red spots though?

I'm fearing scarring etc. What can I use to help ensure scarring will not occur? I'm dubious as to what I actually have as I don't have blisters as such?

Please help me. My general practitioner is being very uninformative/unhelpful. I'm so upset about this and unbelievably scared that I'm going to be marked for life. Also, with impetigo- do you always have the dry skin/blisters/redness constantly? Or does it come and go?

Hello,

First, take heart as the body has a great propensity to repair and recover, given the right ingredients. You should first know that Floxicillan is an antibiotic that can be used to treat staph infections but can also cause some side effects of varying severity. These include: diarrhea, nausea, changes in appetite, anxiety, vomiting, a rash or hives, colitis, confusion and jaundice. Without seeing your symptoms, it would be difficult to determine what your condition is howbeit, it does sound more like perioral dermatitis. I would however, first recommend NOT using Vaseline on your delicate facial skin as this is nothing more than inert, petroleum which will clog your pores and eventually dry your skin out even more as it acts like plastic wrap to your cells.
