Treat Seborrheic Dermatitis Naturally

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition that affects a large number of the overall population so know that you are not alone. My name is Nanette and I am here to show you how the right natural products can help treat your condition.

As a Certified Master Herbalist, I tell my clients that seborrheic dermatitis is usually seen in areas of the skin that are rich in sebaceous glands and sebum. These would include the scalp, face, eyebrows, beard, nose, ears, neck, chest, navel, armpits, and groin area.

The usual signs are areas of pink to red inflammed skin with either dry or greasy flakes. In some cases, the affected areas may also itch or burn significantly.

Many people ask, "What causes my seborrheic dermatitis?"

Although researchers don't know the exact causes, one popular theory is that it is associated with yeast (malassezia genus) organisms that are common residents of human skin. Since they need lipids to survive, they tend to colonize areas of the skin that are relatively rich with sebum.

These fungi, according to some studies, are believed to trigger an immuno-allergic type response in susceptible individuals, while other studies report that the yeast metabolize sebum and generate byproducts that are irritating to the skin.

Other factors suspected of possibly contributing include:

* genetic predisposition

* seborrhea (oily skin) fosters the growth of malassezia

* environment, i.e., temperature, humidity

* exposure to soaps, detergents and irritants that degrade the skin's barrier function

* androgens may play a role by increasing sebum output

* other neurological conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, and paralysis

* mood disorders such as depression * alcoholism

* stress/diet/poor hygiene

* seasons, i.e., winter, summer

* work environment

Natural, topical anti-fungals are used successfully to reduce the skin colonization by the malassezia yeast. In doing so, seborrheic dermatitis improves since fewer yeast are available to trigger an inflammatory response. As such, upon stopping anti-fungal treatment, the yeast often start to re-colonize the skin and symptoms may resurface. I strongly advise to continue using these natural anti-fungal treatments for maintenance purposes even after symptoms clear.

An added benefit of anti-fungal agents is that they also have anti-inflammatory properties. And, unlike harmful topical steroids, topical anti-fungals can be used for prolonged periods without causing skin thinning. They can be applied for body, facial, and scalp use.

(SPECIAL NOTE!:)The use of topical steroids even for relatively short periods of time, promote the possibility of side effects such as thinning skin, steroid rosacea, and perioral dermatitis. In some cases, the prolonged use of topical steroids can also lead to a rebound effect. Upon withdrawal of the steroid, the underlying condition can come back with a vengeance.

Here is the treatment that I recommend to my clients who suffer with seborrheic dermatitis:

First, you want to decrease the bond between the dead skin cells in the deepest layers with the skin's outermost layer.

Start by washing the affected area with a specially formulated mild "non-soap" cleanser or shampoo(if on the scalp) that contains only herbal ingredients that are organically grown and hypo-allergenic. It must also have dynamic anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-fungus properties to control yeast and prevent potential skin infection.

Then, the therapeutic cream you apply should be plant based, contain shea butter , stop itching, fight possible infection, and repair skin 7 layers deep and be hypo-allergenic.

Note that the #1 most important factor about a natural therapeutic skin cream is that it has the capability to penetrate not only the packed up flakes and crust formation, but also penetrate the 7 layers of skin.

This is crucial to getting "deep down" relief and resolve.

The ingredient urea provides this important feature. The dry or greasy flakes should improve almost immediately after you begin your treatment with the right products. For a few, it may take several days to several weeks for the affected areas of your skin to return to a more normal thickness.

Remember, the best moisturizers are also the thickest and provide a very rich emollient level. You may need to use it several times a day.

I advise my customers to become a "label reader" as this is vitally important. It should be a very thick cream with a very rich emollient level. It should also contain the vitamins C, A and E as well as soothing Chamomille, Comfrey and Calendula Herbal Extracts and Shea Butter .

Vitamin-derived antioxidants from plant sourced ingredients not only make the best ingredients for your "inside", but for your "outside" as well. A pure and gentle cleanser will be just right.

These prime ingredients have a great therapeutic effect on healing and skin restoration. For those of you who have seborrheic dermatitis on the scalp, face or torso, choose specially formulated products for those areas as well.

As an important note, you must be consistent and diligent. Your condition will improve since the body responds to natural, plant based remedies quite well.

Being a practicing herbalogist, I have seen 1000's get relief with the right specially formulated products.

Below you will find a link to the natural products I recommend to all my clients that, in my professional evaluation, work BEST for seborrheic dermatitis.
