Response to Shampoo Question by: Nanette from Skin-Remedies.com
Hi Sarah,
This is actually a very common question from folks who are trying to find a pure and gentle enough shampoo to use. Many seek the highly commercialized brands advertised in the media for babies and young children. Unfortunately, I have some bad news about the Johnson and Johnson Tearless Baby Shampoo you asked about.
Believe it not, this shampoo contains a chemical in its formula that actually numbs the nerve endings in the eyes. So when shampoo falls into baby's eyes the numbing effect goes into action and baby does not even feel any stinging from the soapy suds. This is what so many parents are washing their children's hair with......which, truth be known, would appall the masses!!
Here are the ingredients in the Johnson and Johnson Baby Shampoo: Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, PEG-150 Distearate, Fragrance, Polyquaternium-10, Tetrasodium EDTA, Quaternium-15, Citric Acid, Yellow 10 and Orange 4. May also contain: Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide.
You can see it's filled with a number of chemicals, dyes and fragrance.....not what you want for baby or you! Below I've listed just 3 ingredients contained in most hair products and the damage that they do!
FRAGRANCE - if you see the word "fragrance" on the ingredient list it means synthetic ingredients that can cause allergic reactions.
PHTHLATES, (pronounced thowl-ates) - used in a lot of skin-scalp-baby care products to stabilize fragrances, also makes plastics flexible. Studies have suggested that phthalates can cause reproductive problems in boys and early puberty in girls.
SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE - used because it is an inexpensive detergent and makes mixtures foam well but has cancer causing properties.
BETAINE - used in bath products like shampoos and hand soaps, and in cosmetics as an emulsifying agent and thickener, can cause a red, drying rash on your scalp, around the eyes and along the neck, with flaking, peeling, and itching.
Our company had definitely seen a tremendous need for a truly pure, gentle and all natural shampoo which is why I formulated our HERBAL SHAMPOO TREATMENT. It can be used on infants and adults alike and works quickly to restore and repair all types of problematic scalp and hair and also does wonderful things for the hair shafts as it fills them with much needed moisture.
As far as how often people should shampoo their hair, there really is no set answer for everyone as our needs often differ due to genetics, lifestyle, activity levels, environment etc. So what I would say is that when a person notices their scalp and or hair feeling greasy, go ahead and wash your hair with the proper, natural shampoo. It will cleanse the scalp and hair shafts and enhance that crown of glory we all desire....healthy scalp and beautiful hair.
