Steroid Withdrawal Sufferer

I have used prescription steroids both orally (prednisone) and 1% triminacolone cream for eczema. I went off of the prescription creams last December & had a horrible rebound effect. I then switched to over the counter 1% hydrocortisone cream, which helped a little. Then about a month and a half ago I went off the over the counter cream, and now have severe swelling, edema (water coming from ears & scalp, when I scratch), itching & hive like patches all over my body, head to ankle, in places where I never even used the steroid cream. I'm taking antihistamines and an analgesic cream for the itching. Did I mention my face is peeling? I went to a doctor but he prescribed more steroids. Can your cream help me? Thank you.

Hello Cecile,

I'm sorry to say, but it doesn't surprise me that after you stopped using steroid prescriptions as well as over the counter steroid creams you experienced a horrible rebound effect! Steroid use, at any level, can get into the blood stream and cause many problems. In addition, drugs force the body to produce a certain response that often goes against the body's natural function and design. Side effects from steroid use include thinning and discoloration of the skin, easy bruising, permanent dilation of certain blood vessels, burn marks on skin, liver and kidney damage and a weakened immune system. From what you have described such as symptoms of sever swelling, hives and continuous itching, it sounds like your body is certainly experiencing a rebound effect from the steroids.
