Below you will find a list of some of the most prominent harmful ingredients that are contained in many of the brands and products that most people use everyday!
ALCOHOL - dries out hair and skin so if you tend to have dry skin, avoid most hairsprays and volumizers, which contain tons of alcohol.
BHT: Antioxidant. Contact allergies/dermatitis; potential carcinogen; may cause birth defects.
DEA (diethanolamine): is a hormone-disrupting chemical found in many shampoos. They're thought to cause cancer so stay away.
DYES: Synthetic alteration of color by use of chemicals that has been linked to cancer and tumors.
FRAGRANCE: Also known as Parfum: synthetic components that trigger asthmatic and other allergic reactions; skin irritation; central nervous system disruption and can even disrupt hormone balance. A single fragrance may contain 600 or more different synthetic chemicals, many of which have been shown to be allergens, irritants, and sensitizers, and to also possess long-term adverse health effects. They are a leading cause of allergic sensitization and contact dermatitis among cosmetic users. Reddened skin, acne, stinging eyes and dryness can all be caused by fragrances. Thus, elimination of fragrances and other harmful ingredients goes a long way.
FORMALDEHYDE -Imidazolidinyl DMDM Hydantoin: these are preservatives in many hair products(creams, gels, sprays) that release formaldehyde, (formaldehyde based solutions are used in embalming to disinfect and temporarily preserve human remains pending final disposition), triggering skin irritations and even heart palpitations.
HAIR DYES: Studies have linked longtime hair dye use with these toxic chemicals may lead to bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.
HYDROQUINONE: is a compound used in a number of skin products to reduce the appearance of dark spots and freckles. This carcinogenic chemical has been known to increase skin sensitivity, can cause extreme redness, itching and in some cases a severe burning sensation and has been linked to tumor growth. Although FDA approved in the USA it is illegal in some countries.
MEA (monoethanolamine): is a hormone-disrupting chemical found in many shampoos. They're thought to cause cancer so stay away.
MINERAL OIL: Also known as Parafinnum liquidum: Lubricant emollient. Also known as mineral oil this substance ultimately destroys the natural oily barrier of the skin, leading to dryness. A key ingredient in some hair shine and frizz control products. It is the worst for oily or problematic skin. Mineral oil is actually a by product in the processing of gasoline from petroleum. The molecules of the mineral oil are too large to even pass the pores of the skin and will only sit on top of your skin "sealing in" the germs and suffocating your already thirsty skin. as well as cutting off precious oxygen and preventing toxins from escaping the skin which can cause acne. Mineral oil is simply a cheap filler 80% of companies use to help increase their products regardless of the harmful effects to your skin and health.
PARABENS: Methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben, propylparaben: These are preservatives that can irritate the skin making you susceptible to contact allergies. They are found in popular skin lotions and shampoo that are synthetic toxic substances that can increase women's breast cancer risk. Parabens are also extremely well absorbed via the skin. Leave-on products, such as skin lotions, hair sprays, gels and other hair products as well as facial make-up, are of greatest concern because of the long exposure time and opportunity for migration of these harmful ingredients via the skin into the bloodstream.
PEG-150: Acts as a thickener, solvent, emulsifier and surfactant and causes skin irritation.
PETROLEUM: is a crude oil found beneath the ground and refined to produce fuels including gasoline, kerosene, and diesel oil. When it is added to beauty products (primarily as a cheap filler), it makes that product comedogenic since it coats the skin and clogs the pores and does not, therefore allow moisture in. Because of this, petroleum can cause acne, irritation, dandruff and skin dryness.
PHTHLATES - used in a lot of skin-scalp-baby care products to stabilize fragrances, also makes plastics flexible and can cause damage to the immune system. These are problem chemicals, and studies found that men with the most exposure to these harmful ingredients were on average about three inches larger in the waist than other men. Their insulin resistance levels were notably higher as well.
SIMETHICONE: Is a synthetic silicone-based moisturiser that does not allow the skin to breathe.
SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE - used because it is an inexpensive detergent and makes mixtures foam well but has cancer causing properties. Additionally, sodium lauryl sulfate may be damaging to the immune system, especially within the skin as skin layers may separate and inflame due to its protein denaturing properties as well as causing damage to the hair follicle resulting in hair loss.
SYNTHETIC CHEMICALS: A compound produced by combining two or more unnatural (artificial) substances to produce what is called a synthetic chemical which in turn add to the list of harmful ingredients.
